Setting up GeoTag geofences and alerts for site departures

Introduction

Use geofences in GeoTag to monitor when equipment enters or leaves a site, yard, depot, or job location. This helps fleet, hire, and operations teams spot unexpected movement quickly and keep track of assets between jobs.

Before you start

Before setting up the alert, make sure you have access to the GeoTag app and know which tracker or asset you want to monitor. It also helps to have the site address or boundary details ready.

• A GeoTag tracker or asset already added to your account
• The site, yard, or location you want to monitor
• The people or teams who should receive alerts

Set up the geofence

1. Open the GeoTag app and select the tracker or asset you want to monitor.
2. Create a geofence around the site or location you want to protect.
3. Adjust the boundary so it matches the real site size and shape as closely as possible.
4. Choose whether you want an alert when the asset enters the area, leaves the area, or both.
5. Select the people who should receive the alert message.
6. Save the geofence and alert settings.

Choose the right alert settings

Keep the geofence tight enough to be useful, but not so small that normal movement creates false alerts. For example, allow for loading bays, parking areas, or expected movement around the edge of a site.

If the asset moves between jobs, review the geofence and alert settings each time the site changes so the alert still matches the current location.

Test the setup

1. Move the tracker outside the geofence, if it is safe to do so, to check that the alert triggers as expected.
2. Check the alert preview or notification settings in the app.
3. Confirm that the right people receive the message.
4. Make any changes needed before relying on the alert for live monitoring.

Tips and best practices

• Use clear site names so alerts are easy to recognise.
• Set alerts for the people who need to act, not everyone in the business.
• Review geofences after site moves, job changes, or changes to the yard layout.
• If you get too many false alerts, widen the boundary slightly and test again.
